SUCCESS FOR DWPC IN SCOTTISH CHAMPIONSHIP PRELIMS

DWPC Born 96+s and Men reach the Scottish Championship semi finals where they both play Menzieshill in the respective competitions as they strive to make their finals.

The Born 96+s took an early lead against a determined Hamilton team taking the 1st qtr 5-0 and then never looked like relinquishing the game, coming out winners 14-7.
DWPC managed to retain their composure and discipline throughout giving away only 1 major to Hamilton's 7.  Scott Wilson was again top goal scorer with some excellent work in front of goal despite the physicality of the
defenders.  Jake Howes continued to show fine form in goals however all players worked hard throughout the game and delivered an excellent all round team performance.

A reduced Men's team managed a convincing win over Western 29-5 displaying an excellent example of a disciplined, fast paced and skilful style of play, picking up only 5 majors against 13 for Western.
Not to be outdone by the Ladies goalie in their match, Simon Metcalfe also managed to score from his own goal area with Andrew Woodall overall top goal scorer.

Despite a well fought and close game throughout, DWPC Ladies team narrowly missed out in their prelim by a single goal against Menzieshill to lose 9-8. However DWPC has teams competing in 4 of the 5 competition semi finals (Men, Male U21, Mixed Born 94 and younger and Mixed Born 96 and younger) at the 2011 Scottish Waterpolo Championships being on 28/29 Jan at Kirkcaldy and joins the following East District clubs taking part: Warrender, Portobello and Edi Uni.  The President of Scottish Swimming is expected to attend the finals and presentations.

Falkirk Water Pool Festival 10 Dec

DWPC rounded off a successful year with our Academy (mini polo and Development) squads players taking part in a terrific afternoon of junior development waterpolo on Sat 10 Dec at the Falkirk Festival hosted by the
newly formed Falkirk Otters Waterpolo section.  DWPC took a squad of 19 players ranging from age 8 to 14 years.  Games were played full length at two standards; mini polo and U16 Development.
This tournament involved players from DWPC, Falkirk, Stirling and East Dunbartonshire and everyone got plenty of match time, the games were highly competitive and played in a good sportsmanlike manner.

A credit to the players of all the teams taking part and the presence of so many supporters contributed to the events positive atmosphere.  There were two referees and full timing equipment which gave some of the newer players on all teams their first taste of a real match set-up.

With many of our players taking up duties in both standards there were a few red faces by the end of the day. They can all now look forward to a few weeks rest and the clubs social night at Pizzahut and Bowlplex before
training restarts on 8 Jan 2012 at Carnegie

A special mention should go to the host club Falkirk for organising a terrific first tournament which was enjoyed by all clubs taking part.  Well done to all who took part.

East District Award to Waterpolo Player Luke Thomson

Exciting Evening for DWPC Minipolo Team

DWPC mini polo team were in action on Thur 1 Dec against Dunfermline Sharks who are based at Dunfermline High School in what could be the Sharks final game before their pool is closed.  It was the youngest team that DWPC have put in the pool, with many of the players aged 8 and under.

A terrifically exciting game ended with a 7-7 draw.  Cameron Baigrie made his debut and played a great game in goals for one of the quarters. All our players showed improvement and were putting to use the skills they have been honing at training. Our seven goals were scored by 5 different player with a mention for Craig Stewart who scored with a magnificent back hook ( don't know who taught him that one but it certainly wasn't Iain or Alan )

Coaches Iain Thomson and Alan Rodger were thrilled with the teams effort and attitude. Well done to all!

Dunfermline WPC Crowned U/18 (Born 93 and Younger) Scottish Champions

Dunfermline cruised to victory in the delayed 2010 93+ Scottish Cup final in  an all East District match beating Warrender Baths 28-9 at NSA Stirling on Sunday 23 Oct .

Dunfermline took control of the game early on with a goal after 15 secs and once they had built up a comfortable lead were able to change the players around and field their born 95 and younger players giving them valuable game time ahead of their delayed cup final in November against Hamilton WPC.  All players had generous time in the water, with the starting seven back in the water to finish the match. Special mention must go to Jake Howes who played an excellent game in goals having stepped in at the last minute to replace Joe Thomson who had to withdraw due to illness.  Once again Dunfermline maintained their discipline with only three majors (one of those being down to inexperience) against the oppositions seven. This is a credit to all our
players involved.  All in all, a great performance!

Team and goals scored: Jake Howes, Alexander Johnstone (1) Calum Ironside, Chris Campbell (4), Zach Thomson (1), Darren Campbell (7), Luke Thomson (1), Neil Vidler (4), Scott Wilson (2), Andrew Melville (4), Ryan Broadbent, Liam Rodger, Daniel Woodall (4).

Success For Scottish Men in Tri-Nations International Waterpolo Tournament

After beating Wales 10-8 in what was a closely fought match on Saturday, Scotland Men subsequently drew 10-10 with Ireland on Sunday to win the 2011 Tri Nations competition in Limerick.  In a close, tense, physical game and the score 10-9 to Ireland with 45 seconds to go, Scotland blocked a shot, countered and scored to draw even with 6.4 seconds left.  Scotland men earned their draw when goal keeper Simon Metcalfe blocked a shot as time expired to maintain the score line and so win the Tri-nations title.

In their first match of this years Tri Nations the Ladies lost to Sweden 5-4 in a nail-biter of a match, missing two shots in the last minute. Goals were scored by Lindsey Williams 2, Caroline Connor 1, Holly Campbell 1.  Scotland Ladies then won their evening match beating the hosts, Ireland, 9 goals to 6. The goals were scored by 6 different players.  Scotland Ladies finished second overall.

Playing in their first major match together, the newly formed Jnr 1995+ girls squad were beaten 14-2 by Ireland. Goals were scored by Katy Barker and Alison Thomson. Gabby Gatherer, the goalkeeper, made eight saves to stop Ireland winning by a greater margin.   As Finland pulled out of the Girls competition, Scotland played Ireland again on Sunday.  This was their closest game and they scored 6 goals, two of them coming from Louise Fox.

In the Junior 1995+ boys competition, Scotland  squad were beaten by Wales on Saturday before losing to Ireland 13-3 on Sunday.  Scotland boys showed a strong improvement on Sunday with Daniel Woodall scoring twice.

Well done to all the players, coaches and staff.

DWPC Men Win 2011 Scottish National League Final

DWPC Men beat Menzieshill Whitehall (MHW) in a tight 2011 Scottish National League (SNL) Final on 22 May at NSA Stirling between 2 well matched teams.

DWPC took a narrow lead from the start reaching a 10-5 lead by the end of the 3rd quarter and managed to hold on to win 12-9 despite a spirited comeback from MHW.

All players worked hard to maintain the tempo in a physical encounter with both sides employing a full press for much of the game.  Both goalies played their part well in keeping the goal count down and the game competitive.

Teamlist in Final (goals in brackets):
S Metcalfe, J Hinley, N Vidler, C Campbell(4), D Stewart(1), D Campbell(1), P Metcalfe(1), A Woodall, S Carlile(1), A Campbell(4), J Thomson.

In addition to those playing today; credit for winning the 2011 League Title must go to all the players who have played at various stages of this years Mens SNL campaign, where DWPC lost only 1 of their games despite fielding a number of junior players.

DWPC U21s Win 2010 Scottish U21 Cup Final

DWPC U21s successfully retained the delayed 2010 U21 Scottish Cup (Malta Trophy) with a 16-13 win over Edinburgh Uni U21's at Kirkcaldy on Saturday 14 May in a hard fought and close game.  Both teams worked hard in a physical and competitive encounter with the game finely balanced until the very end, each team winning 2 quarters each.

Quarter scores (DWPC - Edi Uni): 4-5, 2-0, 7-4, 3-4.
Scores at end of each quarter: 4-5, 6-5, 13-9, 16-13

All DWPC players kept their discipline and control whilst working to maintain a high tempo of play despite coming under pressure from an Edi Uni 'full press'.  They also managed to keep the 'major' count low.  It was an excellent team performance.

Well done to all the boys in a comparatively young U21 squad which also bodes well for the future.

The Men's and Ladies 2010 Scottish Cups were also decided on Sunday 15 May at NSA Stirling so I've done a few lines for them as 3 of the 4 teams came from 2 ED clubs however please remove if either team send their own report in to you:

2010 Scottish Cup Men and Ladies Finals

In matches delayed from Nov 2010 due to the bad weather; Portobello Men, Edinburgh Uni Men and Edinburgh Uni Ladies took part in the 2010 Scottish Cup Finals at NSA Stirling on Sunday 15 May.

Portobello successfully defended their Scottish Men title against Edi Uni whilst the Edi Uni ladies were beaten by Menziehill Whitehall Ladies.

Scotlands Second Annual Waterpolo Champs For Secondary Schools

The Second Annual Water polo champs for Secondary Schools will take place on Sunday 19 Jun at St. Mungo's High School pool, Falkirk.

There will be two competition divisions:
1. Open (any S1-S6 eligible)
2. S1-S3 (mixed boys and girls required - 3 girls minimum)

Water Polo, a sport born in Scotland, is a fun and exciting sport, though new to most schools. The spirit of these championships is to have a fun, yet competitive championship that will encourage players new to the sport.  When possible we will encourage schools to make ties with their closest Scottish Swimming Water Polo clubs for aid in preparing for this competition. Regions have been selected based on this criteria.

The Championship format will depend on how many teams enter in each division.  The intention is to play group round-robin matches followed by a knockout round to determine the champion through 4th place teams. The games will be short, 2 periods of 5-7 minutes.  These championships will be 7-a-side water polo: 6 field players and a goalkeeper, teams can have up to 13 players total.

Details will be sent to all schools but for further information, your schools should contact either Keith Falconer (IHS) (keith.falconer-ik@fife.gov.uk) or Neal Rayner (n.rayner@scottishswimming.com).

Mini Polo First for Dunfermline Water Polo Club

DWPC stepped up their game this week with a somewhat younger team than before.  The club recently established a mini polo section which allows kids not quite at club level the opportunity to get a taste for the sport in a fun based environment.  Last week the minipolo team played in their first game against another local team, The Dunfermline Sharks, based at Dunfermline High School as part of the Community Learn to swim Programme.  Between both teams there were twenty two kids, varying in age from seven to thirteen. Although the Sharks won the game, it was closely fought and all of those who took part were shattered afterwards but thoroughly enjoyed the game. The DWPC youngsters performed well considering their inexperience but the fun doesn't end there as a rematch is planned in the coming weeks to maintain this good competitive spirit and enthusiasm for the sport.
DWPC will continue to look for minipolo opportunities, to get involved with other groups or swim clubs and would be happy to take on challengers.
Further details and photos of the event can be found on our website at www.dunfermline-wpc.co.uk

Success for DWPC at the ASA National Age Groups Preliminary Round for Junior Boys (Born 93+)

After the Group B preliminary round at the ASA National Age Group Junior Boys Championships on 5 Mar at Liverpool Aquatic Centre, DWPC successfully qualified with 3 well fought wins and then finished with a draw against Lancaster City, the top seeded team of the competition.

Despite short games of 2 halves of 7mins, all the players got plenty of pool-time and gained valuable game experience playing at this higher level against bigger, stronger opposition.

Next up for this squad is the 1st round on Sat 19 Mar of the 2 day qualifying stage, with the second round for the successful teams on Sun 20 Mar.  This will be an even bigger challenge for all the players with full games being played in a round robin involving the top 2 teams from the other 2 Prelim groups.

94+ Girls Inter-Regional Squad

Selection list for the 1994+ASA Inter-Regionals, these girls will compete 12, 13 February in the top 5 Group in Liverpool.

Menzieshill & Whitehall: Louise Fox, Beth Fyffe, Emma Coupar, Hannah Edwards

Warrender: Anna Green, Mairi Jaap, Katy Barker

E. Dunbartonshire: Alison Thomson

Coach - Derek Docherty (Warrender/Edinburgh University)  Team Manager - Brenda Tate (Dunfermline)

This young group consists of only 4 players with more than a year of proper water polo experience.   However, it also shows the success of the mini polo and schools programs as 10 of these girls came from those programs.  Eight of the ladies are born 1996 and younger they can't be expected to win many matches in the competitive 1994 age group, however it will bode well for the future.
