Presented for outstanding service to the SASA

Ron Taylor awarded the prestigious J Y Coutts Memorial Award

Ron became involved in swimming when his 2 sons began swimming in the 1960s. They were all initially members of Inverleith Swimming Club, Edinburgh. He quickly found a niche for himself within the Swimming committee for the East District. His sons moved to Warrender and as parents do, Ron and his wife Sheena also moved. They both spent most weekends officiating around the local East swimming pools, even venturing as far as the Dollan Baths in East Kilbride.

Ron became the Scottish Swim Convenor: a post which he held for many years. Throughout this time he went abroad as the team manager with the Scottish Swimming team to Tel Aviv and Geneva amongst other places. This was throughout the early 1970s.

He continued his full time work of Town Planning Officer with the Scottish Special Housing Department, a Government run agency, along with weekly commitments to swimming and officiating. In this time he became more prominent in the Administration of District affairs and was rewarded with the East District Presidency which he held from 1991- 92.

He then went on to become the Scottish President in 2000 -2001. This was a period of great change and progression within Scottish organisation, with Ron steering it all calmly. Amongst the many initiatives in that period were:

  • The Millennium Youth Games held at the RCP. This was a mammoth organisation, Ron’s expertise and experience was greatly appreciated. This also involved an invite and presentation at the opening and closing ceremony of the Tattoo, to which all Millennium Youth swimmers were invited.
  • The plans and starting of the National Swim Academy, and the setting up of new offices for Scottish swimming staff
  • The Golden Jubilee of the Schools Swimming Association
  • Diving was on the up with Steve Gladding as the National Diving Coach. He brought along with him diving talent and RCP yet again benefited from Ron’s association with the East District roots.
  • In this year there were also a huge number of Scottish records being broken. The Sydney Olympic Games were held and it was the period of the great Allison Shephard.       A Scottish hopeful amongst the strength of USA and Australia. She was 7th in the Olympic final.

In 2002 he joined Ed Adam’s team on the Editorial board. An essential, yet under praised group of swimming gurus. Regulations and governance is their passion. This role suited Ron well. He was responsible for Synchro regulations, changing every 4 years and in this he was extremely thorough, efficient and always pleasant, yet knowledgeable. He stepped down in 2011.
