Star swimmers take the plunge in Gold Coast Games warm-up

World and Olympic swimming champions will feature in an impressive roster of talent at the Edinburgh International Swim Meet this weekend.

Elite swimmers from the University of Edinburgh will be among those competing at the event, which takes place at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, from Thursday to Sunday (1-4 March).

Also taking part will be double Olympian Lizzie Simmonds, multiple Welsh record holder Kathryn Greenslade and Scottish Champions Lucy Hope and Corrie Scott.

The event incorporates the British Swimming Championships, with 32 British titles up for contention.

It will be the final opportunity for spectators to see many of Britain’s best swimmers ahead of April’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

In action will be Olympic and World Champion Adam Peaty, World Champion James Guy and Olympic medallist Siobhan-Marie O’Connor

International competitors include Spain’s Olympic champion Mireia Belmonte and a strong German team including Olympian’s Lisa Graf, Christian Diener and Damian Wierling.

The event is organised by the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association East District Swimming in association with Scottish Swimming, British Swimming, the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh City Council.

Swimming is one of the University of Edinburgh’s core performance sports. Edinburgh is regularly ranked in the top three at British University Championships swimming events.

Since the programme was introduced in 2008, Edinburgh swimmers have taken part in the World Championships, the Paralympics and Commonwealth Games and numerous international teams.

The University will be represented at this year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games by 13 members of its Performance Swim team and Head Coach Chris Jones.

Jim Aitken MBE, Director of Sport & Exercise at the University, said: “Sport is a key part of University life, and we are proud to be one of the leading sporting universities in the country.  The opportunity to compete against some of the best swimmers in Europe is a tantalising prospect for our swim team, particularly in their home city. This will be a wonderful occasion.”

Maurice Watkins CBE, British Swimming Chairman said: “Edinburgh is a fantastic city, and the welcome we receive from the spectators is always top-class, so I look forward to watching the races in action and to making this the wonderful championships that our swimmers deserve.”

Photographers are invited to attend a photo call at the Royal Commonwealth Pool at 11am on Wednesday 28 February 2018. In attendance will be: Lizzie Simmonds (European champion, double Olympian, British record holder, representing England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games), Joe Litchfield (Sheffield Hallam University, City of Sheffield Team GB, representing England at the 2018 Commonwealth Games), Lucy Hope (University of Edinburgh, Scottish record holder and national champion, representing Scotland at the 2018 Commonwealth Games), Kathryn Greenslade (triple European finalist, World university games, multiple welsh record holder, representing Team Wales at 2018 Commonwealth Games, Corrie Scott, (Scottish record holder, representing team Scotland for her third Commonwealth Games in 2018) Dutch athletes Juri Dijkstra and Jari Groenhart and a number of other Edinburgh swimmers.
