East District Master’s report – Autumn ‘23

The main event this autumn for East District Master's swimming was the British Short Course championships held in Sheffield at the end of October.

The East District was represented by 17 swimmers from 5 clubs, and they were Hearts (finished 43rd), Warrender (52nd), Carnegie (56th), Glenrothes (159th) and Grangemouth (180th). There were 286 clubs competing and Hearts were also the top performing Scottish club.

The best performing East District Master's swimmer was Janet McLean from Carnegie who won 4 golds and a silver medal. Lara Ferguson, also from Carnegie, won 3 golds and 2 silvers but swum an incredible 10 times across the 3-day meet.

Ian McKay from Warrender won 2 individual golds and a silver and set a British record in the 65/69 50 Free as lead off leg in a relay. David Taylor from Hearts won a gold and a silver.

Ruth Sutherland from Hearts won 2 silver and 3 bronze and Vicky MaCrae, also Hearts, won a silver. Rob Lee from Grangemouth won 3 bronze and Carol Lock from Hearts won a bronze.

Moving onto the relays the Warrender Men’s +240 relay team that consisted of Ian McKay, Keith Johnston, Jason Kenney, and Mark Jones set a new European record of 4.10.69 in the 4x100 Free. The same team also competed in the 4x50 Free and the 4x50 Medley, winning gold and setting a new British record on each swim.

There was also the new European Short Course Championships held in Madeira at the end of November. Usually, the European Championships are held long course, but LEN recognised that there was demand for more competitions at that level, so they have now introduced a short course championship as well. The only representative from the East District masters swimming community was Ian McKay (Warrender) who won 3 gold medals in the 50 Free, 100 Free and the 50 Fly. His two 50 swims were British records and his 100 was a Scottish record.
