Congratulations to Lucy McNair of Dunfermline Water Polo Club, East District Junior Water Polo Player of the Year.
As a 16 year old athlete, Lucy has made a significant impact on Scottish Water Polo this year at both Junior and Senior Level: As a 4th year schoolgirl, she was a prominent member of the Wallace HS team that were runners up in the Scottish Schools Open Championships in June 2024 where she played effectively against older boys and girls. Representing the combined Dunfermline WPC/Menzieshill WPC Scottish Cup finals at the Olympia Centre in Dundee. She captained the U/17 team to a 15-8 win over Kirkintilloch then played in the U/19’s 23-18 win against the same opponents before lastly playing in her 3rd game in a row, exemplifying endurance, determination and resilience where the team won 17-4 against Warrender Baths Club in the Senior Final. In all three matches Lucy was a 1st seven starter and played a prominent attacking role scoring 11 of the club’s 55 goals on the day. These successes were in addition to being a positive contributor to successful club winning campaigns in the Scottish U19 and Senior National Leagues for season 2023/24. Lucy also captained the combined club’s U/18’s girls’ team, showing excellent leadership, in their journey to the BMC Cup Final in September 2024 where they lost to a very strong Diamonds Water Polo Club from Clonard in Ireland who were unbeaten throughout the tournament in a very competitive contest.
Lucy has competed for the composite side Caledonia at both Junior and Senior level this year. In March 2025, she captained the U18 team at their first entry to the British National Age Group Championships in Liverpool and whilst the team lost all 4 games (3 of them heavily) Lucy’s leadership and determination helped enable the team to make progress in as the contest progressed, culminating in a 12-18 loss to the group winners City of Bristol in their final game with Lucy playing her best match of the series scoring 6 of the team’s goals. At Senior level, she was an integral part of the successful Caledonia team that have gained promotion from the British Conference League into the BWPL Division 2 for season 2025/26. At Scotland National level, Lucy represented the U18 National Development Squad with distinction at the British Inter Regions Competition in Sept 2024 winning the tournament’s top goal scorer award and also being voted her team’s MVP. At International level, Lucy competed with and captained the Scottish U/18 team who achieved a 7th (8 teams) place finish at the Junior tournament in Brno Czechia. Against very strong opposition Lucy was Scotland’s top goal scorer. Lucy has also been a committed member of the Scottish Senior Ladies Squad since 2023 when she made her debut for the team as a 16 year old at the Home Nations Tournament in Dublin. She has recently been selected to play in a Scottish Select Team that will participate in training matches in Leiden, The Netherlands 4-7 July 2025.
